My Internship Experience: Chris Perkowski

This past summer, I was fortunate enough to land an internship with WNYW-Fox 5. I split time between the News and Sports departments and was able to work with many talented people both in front of and behind the camera. It was a real treat to go out in the field with reporters and cameramen and be able to see how a story is produced. I received advice and pointers from many on-air personalities during my time there and gained a much greater knowledge of the field that I wish to work in one day.

With the Sports department, I was lucky enough to go with cameramen and sports anchors to a number of events. For instance, I was able to go to a Mets game and watch the game from the press box and then go into the Mets clubhouse in order to get soundbites from players. I went to Giants training camp, which, as a Giants fan, was an unbelievable experience. I was able to go to the MLB All Star Gala at the Intrepid and meet former MLB All Stars and see a live broadcast put together. Just as well, we had many guests come in for interviews and I was able to speak with many people working in broadcasting, as well as a number of athletes.

All in all, I learned so many techniques and skills while at Fox 5, and received valuable advice from the sports anchors that I worked with every day and have been able to become close with, as well as the producers and writers. I found it humbling when people reached out to me in order to give me advice, and to have been told that I wouldn’t have a problem finding a job in the broadcasting world. As a person who wishes to work in Sports Broadcasting, it was a very memorable experience and everything that I saw firsthand at one of the “big four” networks will prove to be invaluable to me in the future.
